Garabaghname

About event

"Garabaghname" is a play based on the work "The Ruler and His Daughter" by People's Writer Ilyas Efendiyev.

The play is based on historical events that took place in the 18th century in Shusha, the center of the Karabakh Khanate, and tells the story of the social and political life of the Karabakh ruler Ibrahim Khan, as well as his family life.

The dramatic work is a literary and symbolic celebration of our people’s struggle for national freedom and independence, as well as national unity.

Ibrahim Khan, having established his rule in the Shusha fortress, tries to strengthen political and economic relations and friendship with both Iran and Russia. His policies initially cause hidden discontent, and later open resentment, in other khanates of Azerbaijan. Taking advantage of the situation, the Armenian community exacerbates the disagreements between the khanates, turning them into open hostility. All of this leads to great disasters for Azerbaijan. Ibrahim Khan believes in the sincerity of the Tsar's policies but eventually realizes that he has been deceived.

In the play, Ibrahim Khan is depicted as a complex, contradictory, and tragic character, caught in the whirlpool of social-political and domestic events. He even sacrifices his daughter, Agabeyim-aga, by marrying her off to the Iranian ruler Fathali Shah. However, this separation cannot erase her love for Karabakh from her heart.

The director of the play is People's Artist Merahim Ferzaliyev.
